expansions
Bridges are made of section of metal with gaps between each slab. why ? on hot days the metal slabs expand and at nights when the temperature gets cooler, the contract. the gaps are meant to avoid damage due to the expansion and contraction.
the bridge in the picture below rests on metal roller.
when the bridge section expand, the roller make them move.
In order that steel connections do not bend as the effect of the thermal energy, each of them cannot be put closely.
There should be sufficient space between the steels to avoid damages on the bridge which are caused by expansion and contraction of the steel (see figure 3.11).
when the train passes its truck, the noisy sound of the train will
be heard more loudly during the winter than in the summer. During the winter, the irons on the track of the train will contract so that the gaps among those irons will be bigger (figure 3.11b)
